Why people pick Signal Marketing for web development

Below is why brands pick us to build their sites instead of the dozen UK dev shops they had to choose from. Honest version. — Oliver Ball.

Reason 1. We don’t build on page builders

The typical UK small business WordPress site is built on Elementor, Divi, or WPBakery. It looks fine at launch. By month 18 it has 25 plugins, scores 28 on mobile PageSpeed, and crashes when the host updates PHP. Nobody knows which plugin to remove because everything might break.

We don’t ship that. Custom PHP themes built from scratch. Vetted plugins only — typically fewer than 10 per site. ACF for content flexibility. No drag-and-drop builders. The result is sites that score 90+ on mobile at launch and stay there because there’s no plugin layer accumulating cruft over time.

For ecom we build on Shopify with custom Liquid. For complex apps, custom React/Next.js. The platform matches the use case rather than being whatever the agency happens to know.

Reason 2. We host the WordPress sites we build

Most agencies hand off to a third-party host like SiteGround, Bluehost, or WP Engine and call it done. The result: cheap hosting on shared infrastructure, slow response times, support tickets that take days, and PHP versions that fall behind security patches.

We run our own UK-based VPS infrastructure for our WordPress builds. Faster than most managed WP hosts, often cheaper, and we have full control. When a security update needs pushing, we push it that day. When a database query needs optimising, we optimise it. No support ticket queue.

For Shopify and Next.js we obviously use the platform’s own hosting (Shopify) or Vercel/our infra (Next.js). The principle is the same — we control the stack so we can fix it when it breaks.

Reason 3. We’ve built our own tools, not just clients’ sites

Most UK dev shops have only ever built sites for clients. We’ve also built our own. The site you’re on right now (signal.marketing) runs three custom WordPress plugins we built specifically for our use case:

  • Signal SEO Command Center — full SEO plugin replacing Yoast/Rank Math, 9 tabs covering Quick Edit, Alt Tags, robots.txt, llms.txt, Sitemap, Schema, Settings
  • Signal Redirects — 301/302 redirect manager with live URL validation that prevents redirecting active pages
  • Signal Cleanup — HTTPS enforcement, database URL cleanup, HSTS, security headers

Building infrastructure for ourselves means we’ve solved the problems your project will hit before you even start. The Save Kempston Rural campaign platform was built from scratch in 3 days using PHP, Tailwind, JavaScript, and MySQL — no CMS, no plugins, no theme. Same operators that run Signal’s own infrastructure.

Reason 4. Performance you can actually measure

We target 90+ on mobile PageSpeed Insights at launch. Core Web Vitals green on LCP, CLS, and INP. Real-user metrics, not lab scores cherry-picked from an empty cache.

If we don’t hit those numbers at launch, we fix the build until we do. Performance isn’t a “phase 2” task we’ll get to next quarter. It’s launch criteria.

For ecom this matters more than people realise — every 100ms of latency costs conversions on Shopify. For SEO it matters because Core Web Vitals is a confirmed ranking factor. For UX it matters because slow sites feel cheap.

Reason 5. Project-based pricing, no surprise extras

Typical timelines and rough scopes:

  • Simple WordPress (5-10 pages): 3-5 weeks
  • Shopify theme build: 4-8 weeks
  • Complex WordPress (custom post types, integrations): 6-10 weeks
  • Custom Next.js app: 10-20+ weeks depending on scope

Pricing is project-based, agreed up front, with milestone payments tied to deliverables. No “we hit a complication, that’ll be another £4k” mid-build. If we underestimate, that’s our problem, not yours.

Optional ongoing maintenance retainer: updates, backups, security, uptime monitoring, small content changes. Quoted per site. Full service breakdown here.

Reason 6. Real builds you can audit yourself

Every site we’ve built is live and you can audit them yourself. Run them through PageSpeed Insights. Check the source. Look for plugin bloat. Check Core Web Vitals.

Do you host?

Yes for WordPress (UK VPS). Shopify uses Shopify. Next.js on Vercel or our infra.

Do you also do design?

Yes via Website Design, or we work from your existing Figma.
