Guide / SEO pricing

How much does SEO cost in the UK?

A straight answer with the actual numbers, not a hedged “it depends”. Below is what UK SEO costs in 2026 across freelancers, agencies, and in-house — plus what you actually get at each price point and where the rip-offs are. — Oliver Ball.

The short answer

UK SEO retainers in 2026 sit in five rough tiers:

  • £100-£250/month: Cheap “SEO packages”, often Fiverr-tier or outsourced. Avoid for most businesses.
  • £300-£800/month: Solid freelancers and small agencies. Real work happens here for SMEs.
  • £800-£2,500/month: Mid-market UK agencies. Most serious SME and ecom retainers sit here.
  • £2,500-£6,000/month: Larger agencies and competitive verticals (legal, finance, multi-location).
  • £6,000+/month: Big-four shops and enterprise SEO. Global brands, complex international, multi-channel.

Hourly rates run £75-£250/hour depending on seniority and city. Project work (audits, migrations) typically £1,500-£15,000 per project.

What you actually get at each tier

£100-£250/month — usually a trap

“SEO packages” at this price typically include directory submissions, low-quality content, and PBN-style links. The work that does happen risks penalties under Google’s spam policies. Even when nothing harmful happens, the work is so thin it doesn’t move rankings. We’d say avoid.

£300-£800/month — real work for SMEs

Solid freelancers and small agencies live here. Realistic deliverables: technical audits, on-page optimisation, 2-4 content pieces a month, foundational link building, monthly reporting. Right tier for most UK small businesses serious about organic growth. Our SEO retainers start at £400/month.

£800-£2,500/month — the sweet spot for most ecom + SME

Higher content volume (4-8 pieces/month), more aggressive link building, multi-channel coordination, deeper technical work. This is where most UK SMEs end up sitting after 6-12 months as the work scales with results.

£2,500-£6,000/month — competitive verticals

Legal, financial services, healthcare, multi-location operations. Categories where E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) requires more rigour. Google’s helpful content guidance applies harder here.

£6,000+/month — enterprise

Multi-domain, international, large content production teams, dedicated technical SEO, integration with PR and brand. Global brands and enterprise sites.

What drives the price

SEO pricing varies across the same agency depending on these factors:

  • Competition. “Solicitor London” is a vastly more expensive keyword to target than “boutique furniture Stockport”. More competition = more content + more links + more time = higher retainer.
  • Site size. Auditing and managing a 50-page site is cheaper than a 5,000-page ecom store with 40 international subfolders.
  • Technical complexity. A clean WordPress site is easier than a custom-built React app with hydration issues.
  • Content volume. Higher content cadence (8+ pieces/month) costs more than 2-3 pieces/month.
  • Link building intensity. Digital PR and high-DA placements cost more than basic resource link outreach.
  • Geography of the agency. London agencies charge 30-100% more than Manchester or Leeds agencies for the same work due to overheads.

In-house vs agency cost comparison

A common question is whether to hire SEO in-house instead of working with an agency. The numbers:

  • Mid-level SEO specialist UK salary: £35-£55k + ~25% on-cost (NI, pension, equipment, software) = £45-£70k all-in.
  • SEO tools the role needs: Ahrefs or Semrush (£200-£500/mo), Screaming Frog licence, rank tracking. £3-£8k/year.
  • Content production: Either another hire (£35-£50k) or freelance writers (£300-£1,500/article).

All-in for a basic in-house SEO function: £80-£120k/year. Equivalent agency retainer with comparable output: £15-£30k/year (£1,250-£2,500/month). Agencies win below £5M revenue. In-house wins at scale.

Hidden costs to watch for

  • Setup or onboarding fees. Some agencies charge £500-£3,000 just to start. Most reasonable agencies don’t. We don’t.
  • Long contracts. 12-month minimums lock you in through the slow part. Look for rolling monthly with reasonable notice.
  • Tools billed separately. Some agencies pass on Ahrefs/Semrush costs to clients. Reasonable agencies absorb tool costs into the retainer.
  • Cancellation fees. Watch for “release fees” on accounts or “data export charges”. These shouldn’t exist — your data is yours.
  • Per-keyword pricing. “£X per ranking keyword” pricing is usually a tactic, not a service. Real SEO targets entity authority and topical relevance, not isolated keywords.

When SEO isn’t the right spend

SEO is the wrong investment if:

  • You need leads in 30-60 days. SEO works on a 3-12 month cycle. Google Ads is faster.
  • Your category has no search demand. Some product categories don’t have meaningful search volume. Meta Ads often work better here.
  • Your site is fundamentally broken. No amount of SEO fixes a site with a 0.4% conversion rate. Fix the site first via website design or web development.
  • You’re a hyper-local service. A plumber in Wigan cares more about Google Business Profile than traditional SEO.

FAQs

What’s the cheapest SEO that actually works?

Realistically, around £400/month with a competent freelancer or small agency. Below that, the labour cost doesn’t add up to meaningful work.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, but it’s usually false economy unless you have technical aptitude and 10+ hours a week. Most founders’ time is better spent on the business.

Are London SEO agencies worth the premium?

Sometimes. Their overheads are higher, not always their work. More on London SEO.

Should I pay per-keyword or by retainer?

Retainer. Per-keyword pricing usually means thin, isolated work that doesn’t compound.

What’s a “good” ROI on SEO?

3-10x at scale is realistic for most B2B and ecom. Below 3x in year one is normal — SEO compounds.

Will AI replace SEO agencies?

It’ll change the work but not eliminate it. AI Search Optimisation is the next layer.

Are SEO guarantees ever real?

No. Anyone guaranteeing specific rankings is lying. Read Google’s own guidance on this.
