Guide / Do I need GBP

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

Almost certainly yes. Google Business Profile is free, drives the local Map Pack rankings most local businesses depend on, and not having one is leaving money on the table. Below is when it’s essential, when it’s optional, and when paid management is worth it. — Oliver Ball.

The short answer

Yes, you need one if you serve local customers (storefront or service-area), if buyers might Google your business name, or if you want to show up on Google Maps. The vast majority of UK businesses fall into at least one of these categories.

Less essential if you’re a pure online business with no local component (a SaaS company serving global customers from a remote team, for example) — though even then, having a profile for brand SERP defence is usually worth the 30 minutes.

Setting up a profile is free. What costs money is managing it actively. Below is when paid management makes sense.

Why GBP matters more than people realise

  • Map Pack dominates local search. Over 70% of local search clicks go to the top three Map Pack results. If you’re not there, most local buyers don’t see you.
  • Mobile search is GBP-first. On mobile, the Map Pack appears above organic results for “near me” and “[service] [city]” queries. Mobile is 60%+ of UK traffic.
  • It’s a free trust signal. Reviews, photos, hours, services — all visible at a glance. Buyers compare profiles before they click through to websites.
  • It feeds Google’s AI Overviews. Google’s AI summaries pull from GBP data when answering local queries.
  • It’s the fastest local SEO win. Map Pack rankings move in 30-90 days vs 3-6 months for traditional SEO.

Who absolutely needs a GBP

  • Storefront businesses. Shops, restaurants, cafés, salons, gyms. Customers physically visit you.
  • Service-area businesses. Plumbers, electricians, mobile beauticians, dog walkers. You travel to customers within a defined area.
  • Professional services with offices. Solicitors, accountants, dentists, financial advisors.
  • Healthcare practices. GPs, dentists, physio, chiropractors, mental health practices.
  • Hospitality. Hotels, B&Bs, event venues, wedding venues.
  • Trades. Builders, roofers, decorators, joiners.
  • Education. Schools, tutoring, training providers, driving instructors.

Who can probably skip it (or just have a basic one)

  • Pure ecom with no local component. Selling online globally, no local fulfilment, no physical presence.
  • SaaS / B2B serving global markets. Customers don’t search for you locally.
  • Remote-only consultancies. Working with clients UK-wide and internationally without an office presence.
  • Affiliate sites or content publishers. No service to deliver, no customers visiting.

Even in these cases, setting up a basic GBP for brand SERP defence is usually worth doing — your business shows up in Google’s right-hand panel when someone searches your name, which builds trust.

DIY vs paid management — when to switch

DIY is fine if:

  • You have 2-3 hours/week consistently
  • You can write basic post copy and review responses
  • You’re in a low-competition category
  • Your local market is small and the upside is limited

Paid management makes sense if:

  • You’re in a competitive local category (London services, central Manchester, etc.)
  • You have multiple locations
  • You can’t reliably keep posting weekly and responding to reviews
  • You want active review generation, not just response

Our GBP management is £99/month. £49/month review add-on if you want active review generation flows. Most service businesses recoup the cost within the first 60 days.

What happens if you don’t have one (or don’t manage it)

  • Competitors take your local market share. Top 3 Map Pack positions get 70%+ of clicks.
  • Google auto-creates a profile from data. Often with errors. Better to claim and control it yourself.
  • Negative reviews go unanswered. Bad reviews + no response is a worse signal than bad reviews with thoughtful replies.
  • Hours, services, and details drift out of date. Customers find wrong info, frustration follows.
  • You miss the AI Overviews layer. Google’s AI summaries pull from GBP — without it, you’re invisible in AI-driven local results.

Setting one up — the basics

  • Claim and verify. Via google.com/business. Verification can take 5-30 days (postcard, video, or phone depending on category).
  • Pick the right primary category. Most important single field. Influences which queries you rank for.
  • Add secondary categories. Up to 9 more. Add every relevant one.
  • Complete every field. Hours, services, attributes, business description (750 chars), products, photos.
  • Add 10+ photos at launch. Exterior, interior, team, products, work.
  • Request 5-10 reviews from happy customers. Reviews are the biggest single ranking lever after proximity.
